These traditions concern the returning dead, rather than the aristocratic vampire of later Gothic literature.

Modern references portray the Catacani as a formidable revenant with great strength and speed, able to gain the trust of its intended target.

It also has an unusual association with the mouth, teeth, smile, and blood. Accounts sometimes describe it displaying its teeth or smiling conspicuously, earning the modern epithet “the Happy Vampire.”

Some sources add a blood-transmission motif, though these elaborate traits should be distinguished from what can be securely established in older Cretan and Rhodian folklore.
